Experiment: The GREAT experiment consisted of three provenances of Eucalyptus tereticornis (Temperate, Subtropical and Tropical) grown at six temperatures using controlled glasshouse bays in the S39 glasshouse at Western Sydney University from 2016-01-07 to 2016-02-29. The tropical provenance was also grown under well watered and water limited conditions in a drought sub-experiment. The goal was to document the fundamental thermal niche of these provenances, and to test whether the provenances differed in their temperature responses (generally speaking, they didn't). The files in this package contain data regarding tree growth, leaf-level photosynthesis (light response curves, temperature response curves, spot measurements), leaf respiration temperature response curves, leaf stem and root respiration rates at a common temperature, and environmental measurements.Experiment

Experiments
PCS- provenance climate shift
| ID | Experiment_17 |
| Parent Facility | Facility - Glasshouse S30 |
| Description | 9 provenances of Eucalyptus grandis and 12 provenances of E. tereticornis, spanning a latitudinal gradient in seed source from -38.0 to -15.5 degrees latitude, were grown at their "home" temperature regime and "home + 3.5 deg C". A suite of measurements related to growth, physiology, and molecular biology were collected to test the hypothesis that the degree of acclimation to warming is constrained in warm-origin taxa relative to cool-origin taxa. Also note, a subset of these provenances were used for an extensive drought and heatwave experiment. |

Glasshouse S30
| Code | GHS30 |
| Description | Glasshouse in the S-precinct of the University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury Campus, containing eight naturally lit and temperature-controlled compartments (3 x 5 x 3.5m, width x length x height). This glasshouse is widely used for short-term projects, often with a duration of 2-3 months. Air temperature is measured and controlled by an automated system at user-defined targets (+4/ -2 degrees C) within each compartment. The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide is controlled within each compartment using a system of infrared gas analyzers and carbon dioxide injectors. Supplementary lighting will be installed in 2013 |

The tropical provenance was grown under well watered and water limited conditions. This file contains measurements of environmental data measured in the S39 glasshouse during the GREAT experiment, including air temperature, relative humidity, incident photosynthetic photon flux density, and vapor pressure deficit. Data were measured every second and minutely averages were recorded on the Campbell datalogger present in each bay. Note that these data reflect a different set of sensors than the sensors used for environmental control of the glasshouse bays. Note that trees were planted into the glasshouse bays on 2016-01-07 and the temperature treatments began on 2016-01-08. Thermal screens above the plants were deployed to reduce incident light until 2016-01-11; this was intended to reduce the chance of photo damage during the hot weekend just following planting. PAR sensors were only deployed in a subset of bays (3, 4, and 5) until 2016-2-04; PAR sensors were present in all bays after this date. Plants and temperature treatments were rotated across glasshouse bays on 2016-01-20 and 2016-01-21The experiment was terminated on 2016-03-02. Variable: Description: “Date” The date, in YYYY-MM-DD “DateTime” The date and time combination, in YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS “Bay” 3 to 8. The number of the physical glasshouse bay. "Room" 1 to 6. The temperature regime of the glasshouse room. Mean daily temperatures= 1: 18C, 2: 21.5C, 3: 25C, 4: 28.5C, 5: 32C and 6: 35.5C. Note that Bay and Room numbers were different, and their relationship changed when the plants were rotated in late Jan. “Tair” The air temperature, as measured by a shielded and aspirated sensor (degrees C) “RH” The relative humidity of the air, as measured by a shielded and aspirated sensor (%) “PAR” The incident photo flux density of photosynthetic active radiation (micromoles of photons m-2 s-1). Measured by a licor quantum sensors mounted on a metal pole placed near the center of each glasshouse bay. Care was taken to ensure that the sensor was level and above the leaves of surrounding trees, but this was not always possible. “VPD” The vapor pressure deficit (kPa), calculated from the Tair and RH variables. |

| Description | Experiment: The GREAT experiment consisted of three provenances of Eucalyptus tereticornis (Temperate, Subtropical and Tropical) grown at six temperatures using controlled glasshouse bays in the S39 glasshouse at Western Sydney University from 2016-01-07 to 2016-02-29. The tropical provenance was grown under well watered and water limited conditions. File names: GHS39_GREAT_MAIN_BIOMASS_20160217-20160224_L2.csv Method: Final harvest for the GREAT experiment. Five replicates of each provenance was measured for height, diameter in two directions and number of leaves. The leaves (including petioles) were separated from the stem and scanned for total leaf area using a leaf area meter. The stem (including branches) was cut at the soil surface. The roots were washed free of soil. Subsamples were collected for respiration measurements. 2-3 leaves (~100 cm2), the entire stem (tiny leaves that were not included in the leaf harvest were removed) and roots (sometimes partial roots if the system was too large). Roots, stems and leaves were then dried at 60C and weighed. Variable: Unit: Description: "Prov" A (temperate), B (Tropical) or C (Subtropical) "Pot" The replicate number. The tropical provenance was grown under well watered and water limited conditions. Method: Measure of soil volumetric water content using automated Campbell volumetric water content probes. Probes were CS650’s (30-cm-long soil water content reflectometers) installed vertically into the surface of potted trees. Eight sensors were available in each glasshouse bay; four were installed in well-watered trees of provenance “B”, and four were installed in water-limited trees of provenance “B”. Data reflect half-hourly averages. Note that pots were rotated across glasshouse bays on 20-21 Jan 2016. This file contains some suspect data with VWC values close to zero; these measurements likely reflect time-periods when the probe was removed from the pot or sensor failures (?). Variable: Description: “Date” The date, in YYYY-MM-DD “DateTime” The date and time combination, in YYYY-DD-MM HH:MM:SS "W_treatment" Well-watered (w) or drought stressed (d) “Code” The combination of provenance and pot number (e.g., B-11). Note that these are not unique, as codes are repeated across W_treatments "Room" 1 to 6. The temperature regime of the glasshouse room. Mean daily temperatures= 1: 18C, 2: 21.5C, 3: 25C, 4: 28.5C, 5: 32C and 6: 35.5C. “Bay” 3 to 8. The number of the physical glasshouse bay "VWC" Volumetric water content (%) |
