The Echo of Abstraction: The Aural and Visual Language of Poetic Documentaries
  • Description

The practice-led research project explores and deploys identified Poetic Documentary techniques to address the degradation of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River floodplain resulting from its geographical landscape and human-induced actions such as over-development, growing population and de-vegetation. The research project draws on established methodologies to synergise creative experiments, academic and media text reviews and audience research. It asks how applied poetic documentary techniques affect audiences’ perceptions, emotions, feelings and sense of ecological stewardship. The creative outcome of the project is a short poetic documentary on the Hawkesbury-Nepean River floodplain. The poetic documentary was shown to five participants from Western Sydney to collect quantitative and qualitative data about the impact of the documentary on their emotional journey which was recorded via a survey and semi-structured interview. The research is expected to develop poetic documentaries' literature and creative practice, determine the impacts of the applied techniques and evoke audiences' sense of ecological stewardship.

The dataset contains poetic documentary audience research responses in the form of Qualtrics survey responses and combined interview transcripts.
